Pornographic sites have long been associated with malware. Research shows that almost every porn site will infect a malware to the visitor. At one time BBC stated that porn sites contain malware that cyber criminals can use to collect your data and scam you. From there, based on the reputation of BBC “everyone” believed the story. I would say that it’s not a total lie but it’s a thing of the past. It is true that porn sites have malware but it’s definitely not all of them. In fact further research shows that only a few porn sites harbor malware. Why should we only talk about porn sites, are all other websites safe? Of course not. There are also so many other websites that contain malware and are more dangerous than porn sites. This myth about porn and malware is mostly to discourage people from visiting porn sites.

What are researchers saying about this?

An IT security Analyst known as Longmore did his own research wanting to find out more about porn and malware. It was not out of his interest in porn but out of his quest for expanding his knowledge in IT and security at large. He sampled a number of porn sites and come out with the following findings.
That out of 10 porn sites, 6 sites were clean without malware and that the remaining 4 had only few infections.
That the biggest porn sites were more likely to be infected than others.
From his findings we can say that your chances of getting malware infections on porn sites are less or equal to chances of getting malware on any other site. You need to also note that those porn sites that have malware were not purposely infected. Some sites contain user submitted videos which could infect the site. Another research done by Symantec found that only 2.4% of porn sites contain malware. Symantec took the most famous as well as the not so famous porn sites and studied them. Although traditionally people are scared of porn sites, perhaps this article will reduce your worries. Do not misunderstand the researchers, all they said is that whenever you are browsing the internet, you need to be careful not only on porn sites but on all sites generally. You need to always have protection on your computer. You can install a good Antivirus program that always runs in the background and blocks malware and other threats. Symantec are the creators of Norton antivirus software which is a powerful program when protecting against all sorts of threats. When they released their security report, they had discovered some shocking findings. The said that cyber criminals have now began to attack the unexpected. When you talk of Trojans and worms, the last site you expect to have such is the religious site. Symantec found out that, religious sites, blogs and forums are three times at a higher risk that even porn sites. Are Criminals targeting those who are looking for spiritual fulfillment? You may be asking why this is the case. The explanation is simple. Those who create adult websites have been in the industry long enough and have encountered malware problems for a long time. They have invested time and money to curb this problem in every possible way. So their sites have now been protected against scammers. But with religious sites, the creators usually are reluctant because they don’t expect to be scammed. Hackers are taking advantage of their innocence to put malicious programs that could still data and start sending people malicious emails or even hacking accounts. Attackers always target the least expected places.

Malware in church?

There is one familiar case of a guy called Morrissey. He developed a church website for his mother and didn’t worry about its security until after about 3 months when he noticed that website traffic had gone down significantly. When he visited the site he realized that Google had marked it as malicious so he reported to Symantec. After doing some research he decided to use WordPress to recreate the site. He had heard that WordPress secures against hackers. Yes it does but you also have to be aware of security updates when they are released because just setting and letting it go will have similar consequences. Morrissey would have avoided all the trouble if he had thought of internet security from the beginning when he was setting up the site. He said he had just started with static pages and getting attacked didn’t even cross his mind. He was wondering why hackers would be interested in such sites. It may be to still details of people who like to donate money to fund church activities. Luckily most of the site visitors had seen the warning and kept off otherwise Morrissey’s church would have carried all the blame if the details had been stolen. When a website is hacked, the most common signs for the visitors are; you may start noticing a different behavior on your computer. Hackers like to use rootkits which are hidden programs running under your operating system and taking control of your activities. You may also notice ads on the site claiming you won something or someone requesting to add you as a friend on social media. Hackers also target low traffic sites. If you think your site is safe because you only receive a few visitors you are wrong. Hackers know you are vulnerable and hence want to target you. If you own a website you need to be careful from the beginning. Talk to web security masters and ask about internet security. You are better off spending a lot building a secure site than spending less and building a vulnerable site which can be taken down anytime.
